The Numbers #01 — Shiny Happy People
October 4th, 2016
Maybe it's something in the water.
Impressions:
There's something a little disturbing about how they just made literally all of the characters permanently sparkle. It's not even simply whenever someone has to pan for the camera or looks particularly 'pretty.' There's just a permanent "sparkle" effect around any part of the screen that isn't background. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, it doesn't so much as have jokes as it overdramatizes things and explains why something is humorous, which is distinctly different from actually being humorous. "That doesn't make sense," is not a punchline, guys. This also wasn't really a cohesive episode as much as it was a shotgun-like approach to spitting out the entire cast one after another. That was kind of working when tied together by the prison escape in the first half, even while the jokes weren't, but that fell to pieces in the second.
The second half in general was all over the place and kind of awful. For a while, it seemed to be setling right into "high school boys club not-really-slapstick" show, but a prison cell instead of a club room. And yes, one of the 'jokes' is one of them yelling that they are acting like they're in a high school boy's club, but a prison is not in fact a high school boy's club. Another punchline that will never get old, alongside "we drew a girl but… it's actually a boy!" "WHAAAAAA!?" But then for the last few minutes, it decided that it actually wanted to be taken completely seriously, forewent any even vague overture of humor, and spent a few minutes simply info-dumping the dramatic past of one of the characters and his search for the one-armed man who done wronged him in the past. I guess it was as tired as I was of trying to be a gag comedy and felt like it should end the episode in as boring a manner as possible.
Next Episode:
Such hilarity.
