This Art Club has a Problem! #01 — Sand in the Vagina

July 7th, 2016

I found the problem already.

Impressions:

The problem is that the protagonist is a melodramatic, nagging bitch who is allergic to anybody enjoying themself. It starts out with the male lead asking her "What do you care what I like to draw?" and her response is to destroy his painting and yell "Because screw you, that's why." What a laugh riot. It's supposed to be because she can't express how she really feels, but they've mistaken self-centered, temperamental shrieking harpy for comedy, and later in the episode, blasting on-hold music and tears for emotion and sentimentality. That whole scene was painful. Deafening and painful.

It also pegged this as another show that was trying to have it all, comedy, romance, and drama, and no real idea how to go about any of them in any way but the most superficial. The 'emotional' music is the biggest sin, but the terrible jokes and lifeless characters aren't doing it any favors either. There are even technically two 'stories' to this episode; one for describing the male lead's gimmick, and one for pretending like he's quitting to wring out close to five straight minutes of melodrama music. They were trying to play her off as a beleaguered straight man and tortured, insecure girl, yet only presented a narcissist bordering on obsessive sociopath. Also, the animation was balls.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

I know what you were hoping for, if you hope at all anymore. We’ll never have an anime where someone paints their inside-out jacket then puts in on normally and doesn’t scream about it.

That is an ill-fitting OP. Ill-fitting voice for female lead too but not as out of place as the OP.

As for the rest of the show, this is a series I generally enjoy but the episode didn’t really do its part drawing in new people. Why not just start with everyone introduced to maximize character interactions and maybe give us a flashback as to how we met them at a later date (or not at all!)?
