Kabaneri #06 — Lurk On Titan

May 19th, 2016

Screw this one train car in particular.

Impressions:

You know, it's pretty damn prescient of him to be carrying around bottles of blood, just in case. That's pretty much all of the praise I have for the first half of the episode though. Mumei's buried under debris, feeling sorry for herself, and having poorly produced flashbacks. It's as thrilling in 'action' as it is on paper. Meanwhile, Protagonisto is fighting a poorly produced quasi fight against another horde, half off-screen. You'd think if this was his moment of transition into being awesome, we'd be a little more focused on him being so, but nah. We'll keep that mostly offscreen and have her just declare it while debasing herself. That'll definitely have the same effect.

The second half (well, last quarter), when the amalgam thingy finally got into the caffein and went nuts was a bit better… sort of. The animation certainly picked up, even if the art got very noticeably squibby during it. Still not as good as the opening episodes though, mainly because it was more concerned with looking cool, and so we have a 'tense' fight on the roof of a train with the titan zombie just hanging around not doing anything while regular zombies rain off it, but characters stopping to pose dramatically, and Random NPC and his quest to… unjam the mechanical thingy from the other mechanical thingy so that they could… PUSH A LEVER. A little less handwaving, please. And in a surprise, and the core of the zombie titan holding it all together? The pregnant woman killed a couple episodes ago. Killing her makes the entire thing explode in a shower of zombies, except they all evaporated or something, because Mumei's the only zombieish thing that falls in their general direction.

So while it's certainly beating down pretty much every other show at the moment, especially in the "anything happening" department, the available room for improvement could still be measured in the metric assloads.

They should just show us the train driver working out for 20 minutes.

  • The Phantom says:

That was the pregnant woman? By the clothes I thought she was a member of Mumei Team. Damn I loved the episode, glad to see the plot is still moving and they did not waste an episode uncaving Mumei or showing how they were rescued, it was right into the action against Titan Zombie. Now have to wait another week for next episode tsk tsk tsk.

I… think it was? Maybe you're right. I don't know. They all dress the same.

It certainly seemed like we were supposed to recognize her, and nothing comes to mind but the pregnant woman they keep harping over.

      • The Phantom says:

You should have taken Asterisk, is not Kabaneri but is action oriented and fun somehow.

        • Longing says:

I seriously doubt taking the show that has a high-pitched cutesy-slurring maid would appeal to him. Asterisk has spent the last 3 or 4 episodes trying to rescue said maid who was just introduced and deemed important (to pinky’s weak background) 7-8 episodes ago. The characters run the gambit of having no real development to heavy-handed backstory to introduce their pathetic excuse for a motivation. Hell, the newest episode introduced another addition to the main character’s harem who was there simply to tell him where the maid was being held. Pretty sure her name was Plot Convenience.

That being said… the animation and choreography are a MASSIVE step up from the disappointing 1st season. There’s been a well done fight almost every episode. Props for that.

she did kind of look like that woman but it would be strange if a rekilled zombie somehow outran a train and had enough time to not only find an army but also take over a settlement. Im giving up on the show, just going to skim watch the rest and read your posts on it.
