Phantom World #05 — The Importance of Accuracy in Taxonomy
February 3rd, 2016
Oops. Guess it was some other one that looked 100% identical. Apparently.
Impressions:
You're already in trouble when you try to play off a character with no personality against a character who also has no personality, and have A help B overcome their abrupt attack of angst by simply hanging around and/or being an obnoxious stalker until someone spontaneously spits out the reason why they're such a tortured soul and friendship/penis is the only thing that can heal their tortured soul and keep her from trying too hard, which is only acceptable for a protagonist/penis-haver. Not by doing anything, mind you. Just by being around, and I guess summoning the magical pet to be distracting while other people actually did the heavy lifting. But as the penis-haver, he gets all the credit and the vaginas. Such is the law of anime.
This one deserves some special note for the angst background dump being absolutely disconnected from goddamned anything going on. She breathed in some bad mojo that dicked with her throat, so let me explain how some phantom took away her family and everything she cares about, and is sort of like this one, but not really, so we get both the angst living on as well as adding to the idiotic harem because he… hung around her a little more than usual. And yet, I think the worst bit of writing in the entire episode was a character needing to be reminded of what powers they have, told to use them, repeating that, and then declaring that they'll use them. "We should do something!" "Can't you do something?" "Oh, yeah. I can." Christ, KyoAni. Exactly how bad is the brain damage in this show?

And to think last week, I wanted her to leave with the Rabbits and never be seen again, but with valuable contributions such as this, what was I thinking?
