Chrome Shelled Regios #02 — Misogyny 101

January 17th, 2009

Layfon, you are already ready for the advanced lecture.

Impressions:

Nowhere near as much fun as last week’s episode, but I still enjoyed it overall. Granted, I was laughing quite a bit at all the misogyny in the show. Layfon trades away his love love lunch to another woman for her lunch, manages to piss off 50% of his harem, and one of Koyasu’s secretary’s jobs is to hold his phone to his head for him. This is truly an enlightened time for women and giant insects. I’m glad that the reporter trio barely had any screentime this episode. I was worried about the non-combatants eating up an inordinate amount of time, but if their only role is going to be some quasi-lesbian antics, that’s cool with me.

Most of the episode was spent on fleshing out Nina in general, with special attention paid to her angsting over being protected in the past and then being rejected. Of course, this is immediately followed by a mock fight of capture the flag (more like, beat each other up) against her old squadron. Layfon performed relatively terribly until Felli transmitted Nina’s trauma to Layfon and he went predictably berserk and Hurricane Punched everybody into oblivion, ticking off Nina and Felli. Women. First they beat you up, then they get ticked off when you prevent some other guy from hitting them wtih tonfas. I can’t understand it either.

I’ll be sticking with this one… not like there’s much of a decision to be made here since Saturdays are completely void of anything else at all, aside from maybe a very late night ZKC. It’s nowhere near the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, but I’m getting some chuckles out of it and it’s so much better of an RPG than Tales of the Abyss has turned out to be. More random encounters! Less technobabble exposition!

Oh, and the OP is rather amusing in a peculiar way. First, endless staticy clones. Second, overanimated montage of everybody flying around with DBZ auras.

“Layfon, you are already ready for the advanced lecture.”

I think it should be “Layfon, you should be the one teaching them advance lessons.”

Nina was probably pissed to find out he was holding back all this time and made her feel like a fool.As for Felli, I don’t even know why she’s mad at all.I mean come on, I know her role is for logistics only but I felt all she did was just stand there reading peoples thoughts rather than giving relevant combat information to assist them.I do admit that this episode was fairly slow, nothing really happens much for the first 3/4 but I still liked it overall. So does anyone know if this is a 12-13 episode series just for the winter?

  • Silver says:

Yeah, Nina was probably pissed off because he was holding back against her and I can understand that too since it would mean that he is somewhat looking down on her even if he did not really mean it that way. Felli, I am not so sure about but lets hope she has some more important part of the team.

  • kearsie says:

Felli’s mad because he decided to use his strength, which also means everyone knows he’s fucking broken now, which in some twisted way also means he’s accepted what the SCprez decided and thus made him a traitor to Felli who’s refusing to do much because she doesn’t want to unless it’s concerning grave danger.(i bet)

which also means this was a lose lose situation for Layfon.

  • La Vie En Rose says:

maybe Felli just passing Nina feeling, I’m also wondering what her power is, since it seems she is considered “special” by those ppl who monitor or analyze the fighting.

  • Yue says:

Mmmmmm… hotcakes are delicious and so is this show with butter. ^_^

  • Darco_emp says:

As above have said Felli is mad due to Layfon’s display of strength, and Nina is mad about Layfon holding back against her as well as in the match.

Next week we skip to anime original material, with a touch of plot from volume six, I can only pray for the best… given the scope of the world view from the novel and lack of episodes to cover even 1/2 of it.

  • Aroduc says:

Felli’s reasons aren’t really explained particularly well (or at all) at the end. She just calls him a traitor, but she did realize before that he was holding back his powers on purpose like she is, so that’s probably it. Though that raises the question as to why she transmitted Nina’s thoughts to him.

  • Irie says:

If they are trying to capture some of the manga’s concept, Felli is pissed because she has some powerful ability that’s keeping her in the academy. She wants to decide her own life but her ability makes her too valuable. I think she see’s the same in Layfon and any chance for them to leave is gone. As to why she sent Nina’s emotional plea to Layfon and then get’s pissed, I don’t get it. I think the manga handled that part much better.

It’s a fun show. Seems to be moving through the manga stuff pretty fast.

  • Clown67 says:

I think the reason she sent Nina’s emotional plea to Reifon is to make him decide who to choose… at least I think so =_=

  • Anonymous says:

Felli is just being unreasonable, why trigger Layfon if you don’t want him to Unleash?

  • Hibiki says:

Very interesting and RPGlike. Sticking with this one

  • Yue says:

That’s the point. There’s no need to dwell on Felli’s remarks. It’s all show for the tsundere that she is. ^o^

  • Honoo says:

“That’s the point. There’s no need to dwell on Felli’s remarks. It’s all show for the tsundere that she is. ^o^”

Strangely, I can’t see her as one.

  • Annoy says:

Felli and Layfon are both forced into martial department.

Layforn using his strength to fight means he betrayed Felli.
