Yatterman Night #02 — BIRDS

January 18th, 2015

They’re symbolic!

When the Yatter-robos are chanting yatter, I can’t help but think of this.

Impressions:

Maybe this really is going to bathe itself in sentimentality like a protective coat of slime. This both started and ended with more dead mom, although in the latter case, it was more like blind living crazy woman who happens to look like dead mom. Then again, it’s also making fart and dick jokes, so I’m still having a little trouble getting a handle on what exactly it’s actually trying to do, and the especially bizarre ED isn’t helping matters. Too much would be a fair answer. I’d prefer it increase the levity and decrease the birds, guys, birds, and dead family, although it’d be nicer if they aimed a little higher than farts with the humor too.

Anyway, they build a robot, attack the yatters, turns out that it’s a robot army, go wandering the countryside while hunted, find blind woman who looks like mom who calls Shrimpy her angel. All the while, birds are everywhere until a dove finally explodes into a halo of light, showering down symbolism like manna from the heavens. It’s not subtle, but things coated in enough bloom to start a marijuana farm in it rarely are. I guess I’m still having a hard time getting into it. Only Shrimpy has any personality and she’s so overly cloying that it annoys me. At least it made a bit more progress this week than last, but the characters or plot really need to step up here, and no, being melodramatically saccharine all the time doesn’t count.

I hope that really was his belly button.

The pairing of two adult male and one nine year old girl should be ringing alarm bells!! As to the new girl who is probably Ai-chan’s descedent : not only is she blind, she is probably insane as well. All that is needed is for Gan-chan with a terminal illness to show up!!

The show is made for those who are old enough to have watched the original Yatterman in late 70s/early 80s. The scene where the pig climbing up the tree makes no sense unless you have watched the original.
