Akame #11 — Protagonists vs Some Guys

At least they’re trying.
Impressions:
Just like the Sheele’s death episode, this could have been fantastic if not for the direction… and budget. It probably could have even been safely split into a couple episodes, but after the previous two barely had enough going on to fill one, I’m not going to complain. Especially since there were plenty of moments where some throwaway character started running his mouth to bad stills moments before being unceremoniously gibbed. The bigger issue is that it’s really just some guy, attacking them again, because they’re the protagonists. That’s it. If he was stopping them from doing something, or there was anything at all to add a little emotional weight or personal connection to the fight, that would have helped immensely. His three to four minutes of screen time as entirely comic relief before this also didn’t help.
Anyway, back to the action, which was pretty much constant through the episode. It didn’t have a long, maudlin aside at any point (no, just a short one… again, about Sheele), but it did again lack budget, purpose, and suffered from extreme diarrhea of the mouth. This came to an unholy confluence of sucking at a couple points. The main one I remember was Random Guy #2 jumping into the air at Small Pink and to janky speedlines, spewing out an entire paragraph as he apparently hovered in the air for about 15 seconds before just being shot and instantly vaporized. The music at the end was also kind of… weird and bad. They were clearly going for some kind of discordant… thing to match with the gross anatomy dummy monster form, but it wasn’t doing the scene any favors.
Like the Sheele episode though, it’s still a hell of a lot closer to how I hoped this show had been the whole time. White Fox really needs to find a director who understands how to pace and handle action scenes.
Next Episode:
Nudes.
