Blade Dance of the Elementalists #01 — Magical Girl High

July 14th, 2014

I refuse to call it Elementalers because cheese.

Impressions:

This is far better than what I expected from the DxD/Daimidaler heritage, and has one of the more enjoyable protagonists this season. He’s confident, competent, doesn’t let boobs or whatnot faze him, and is genuinely snarky a few times. The same unfortunately can’t be said for the females, and the budget’s pretty lacking for something that tries to sell itself on action. That was already shifting to low end T&A by the end which is more in line with what I expected, but the hook for the first half definitely included magical bang bang explodey fighty. I also can’t help but remember that he has plenty of fellow LN brothers in characters like Layfon and Ichika (especially Ichika because we’re going with the “only male user in a magical female school” schtick again, complete with “they all want to immediately do him until his penis falls off”) that started out in general mastery of their harems before very very quickly becoming denser than a thousand black holes and just as capable of performing a reproductive act with a female.

The girls, though, are about as bad a set of harem cliches as they come, made worse by the second half of the episode being your standard tour of characters which I’ve become especially tired of this season. The best that can be said for them is that sometimes they get stupid enough to maybe be cute in how flustered he makes them. The second half in general was just dull as hell, and it’s not like the first half was winning any converts to begin with. If it had moved the story along faster, a lot of the issues with the characters could have at least been papered over, but alas. We need to have our tour of the school, one girl introduced at a time in sequence with zero structure or purpose besides “Here’s another warm female body to rub itself on him.”

I can see it becoming at least a passable magical girlfriend harem action show thingy if it could figure out its budget, characters or pacing. I doubt it’ll do any, so more than likely, this’ll probably be as good as it’s going to get.

Next Episode:

I see we’re not going with the budget or pacing then.

12 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Di Gi Kazune says:

This show is about only one thing: Hentai
13 LN volumes so far and approximately half of each LN is devoted to the Demon King of Perversion (of various times of the day) ending up in H situations. Your hero is in the standard mould of unfortunate pervert. Call the girls bland now, but all of them have some issues which will appear sooner or later.

The bad bits aside, the more interesting half of the LNs looks promising. PLUS the character design for the anime is much better than the LN illustrations. Way better. The faces in the LN are so similar that you have difficulty telling apart which nude girl is wh… err.. forget that last line.

    >looks boring and generic
    >aroduc praises it
    sounds about right

    • ZakuAbumi says:

Careful or he might end up throwing a rant about execution at you!

      Because that’ll convince anyone.

      • Aroduc says:

If you guys think that’s praise, I’d hate to see what you think is condemnation.

      >boring
      >dull as hell

      >generic
      >about as bad a set of harem cliches as they come

What the fuck are you even bitching about?

  • anon999 says:

Harem animes are boring and not worth anyone’s time. Although there are a few exceptions.

  • Kadi says:

Wow, this looks bad. Did someone drop a budget or three?

Kinda unfortunate, considering that the original is rather … average for its genre. Unoffensive and readable, at least for a while. I mean, hey, the Flat Tsundere (TM) actually shows signs of mellowing out soon! (stagnates way too soon though, until a dozen volumes in)

  • Mesousa2877 says:

The main protagonist actually looks HOTTER than any of the girls.

Should have been a futanari school…

  • Fate says:

This seems ok. Protagonist is much better than they usually are in these kinds of shows. Will watch.

  • The Phantom says:

He’s confident, competent, doesn’t let boobs or whatnot faze him, and is genuinely snarky a few times.

He will be reduced to Ichika’s levels of stupidity by episode 4.

  • algorithm says:

Good MC and bad girls? So it’s basically missing all the selling points of this kind of show?
