M3 #01 — LOOK

April 13th, 2014

Subtle breast advertisement.

I lied apparently as it popped up right after the last post. Anyway, early NicoNico airing. Actual broadcast begins on Monday the 21st.

Impressions:

A very dark show, and by that, I mean that I was having trouble telling what I was seeing. There’s certainly merit in creating tension by keeping the monsters indistinct and unknown, but these things were filling up the entire screen. Black CGI blobs in dark forests/streets, lurching about. They’re like… the darkness of man that swallows mankind, man. I think one at the end was supposed to be a beetle, but I honestly couldn’t say that with any confidence. Whenever anything at all was happening that wasn’t shooting balls into some poor girl’s tits, it seemed to be night and covered in fog.

Setting that aside, besides the occasional weird yet half-assed focus on breasts, it was kind of boringly formulaic in many ways. Band of gimmicky teenager mech test pilots who are the only ones who can save the world, angsty protagonist who can’t stop thinking about his dead family, gimmicky scientist sucking on a giant lolipop, mysterious singing and glowing girl who’s a part of or maybe piloting the black CGI blobs, spontaneous shared psychic teenage visions of understanding, so on and so forth. Together, they fight crime. Even the manipulative/flirty girl fell pretty flat since she was paired up against the protagonist who bears a disturbing to Final Fantasy’s Squall and responds to all human interaction by grunting.

Then again, literally nothing else airs on Mondays so there’s a good chance I’ll revist this in… uh…  two weeks after I’ve had a chance to forget everything in this episode, but this sure isn’t watching for the action or the exciting characters fighting to save humanity or whatever. It’d be nice if they’d improve the lighting though.

I liked the dark settings but hated the squallesque male lead tremendously, I just hope that the black blob girl will eventually kill everyone, yea that would be epic shit, go black blob girl!
