Dio SINS #10 — We Hates The Casshern!
December 4th, 2008
No! We wants to be the Casshern!
See? This is what happens when my schedule is off from late raws. I get grumpy. And full of bile. I need a nap.
Impressions:
I’m sensing a pattern here. Either we get Dio and some nice action, or we get Casshern’s crazy robot girlfriend of the week. Gee, I wonder which one I prefer? It’s a shame that aside from the violence, Dio’s not a particularly well balanced or interesting character. Who cares if the half dead crazy robot ex-bodyguard for Luna thinks that you’re Casshern? Sure, you were probably going to kill it anyway, but I’m pretty sure nobody would attempt to lose it and curbstomp a random passerby if told that they looked a little bit like Hitler. You were talking trash anyway, Dio. Can’t take it in return? I’m not even sure why he’s building an army to kill Casshern and overthrow Braiking Boss anyway. Isn’t Braiking Boss wandering around the wastelands alone already? And we’ve already seen how efficacious these grunts are. Maybe he plans to use them to kill all the women robots in the world and prevent Casshern from learning any more life lessons.
I like Leda less and less this episode, and I didn’t even really have much of an opinion of her in the first place. For one, Dua (or whatever his name is) was more or less an even match for her and arguably even had the upper hand since it looked like she hits like a girl. That puts her somewhere below Lyuze and above Ringo on the general Threat-o-Meter(tm). It’s not good to start out 0-1 against the robot monster of the week. I guess we might see him again, but I wouldn’t count on it. Second, it’s really not clear to me whether she’s just crazy and worshipping Dio because she’s an obsessive lunatic, or if she’s just using him to get at that immortal life she wants. She seems too incompetent for the latter, but the way she smirks whenever she finishes talking to Dio doesn’t really mesh well with the former.
A pretty decent episode overall though. The fight against Dua was definitely a lot better than I was expecting, although it did feel a bit stretched out since he really seems like some random one shot character. Certainly enjoyable, but it just felt a bit overblown to invest that much time and drama into well… nothing particularly important… sort of like most things in this show I suppose. I’m not even certain what to make of that little tagline at the very end about Luna either for that matter. Both Leda and Casshern think she’s still out there somewhere. How either of them came to this conclusion is beyond me. Maybe when they get back to Casshern himself next episode, they’ll explain that a little better.
And for those of you counting off episodes, the winter schedules have started to be posted and Casshern’s been hard confirmed for a 24/26 run. That news fills me with more dread than hope. Maybe they’ll cut down on Casshern’s girlfriends of the week, but I’m not holding my breath.

At least the show seems like it’s starting to develop a plot now… and it only took 10 episodes!
