Ace of Diamond #01 — Still Not Major League

October 5th, 2013

Now that was a piece of baseball media.

Fun fact, I completely forgot this existed. Oopsies.

Impressions:

Well, it’s certainly more more aware that it’s silly than Ippo was, but its of that annoying Japanese ‘comedy’ style of screaming out every punchline or joke, completely with audio sting and nine times out of ten, a reaction face filling the screen with a splash background. All the characters are also kind of… well, somewhere between idiots and dicks, I guess. Maybe it’s all the screaming ‘funny’ insults at each other and physical abuse in a show that’s also ostensibly trying to also partially stay grounded. Being dicks in itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, but it also expects us to feel emotions for them. Or at least I assume so by the pianoriffic montage of foregoing having fun to do hard work. Go all out or don’t do it at all. Trying to mix both doesn’t work, and especially not when we’re using show to convey him being inept and immature with tell filling in for why he supposedly has talent and isn’t just infantile… which isn’t even part of this episode, but reserved as the cliffhanger for next week, an event so momentous that it even triggers the spider sense of people far far away.

Nothing interesting on the production side either. It’s extremely cheap and the animation can best be described as sparse. Just another yelly sports show that I want to stop trying to make me laugh by yelling at me and hitting the vibraslap. A little more aware that it’s silly than most, but still hamhanded in delivery, too slowly paced, too talky, and too all sorts of other adjectives overanalyzing a kid’s Sunday morning show.

Next Episode:

If you’re reading this, then I’ve forgotten to change the template.
