Daybreak Illusion #05 — It’s A Rich Man’s World

I feel like someone got their notes confused in this episode.

Impressions:

Clearly meant to be a Ginka episode, which makes it all the more confusing that about all we learn about her is that she has a pretty happy and fortunate life now and used to not. That doesn’t exactly feel like it fits in any of the four previous episodes. Okay, so she has to kill a family friend, which could have been, uh, something, except the sum and total of their relationship right up until it was bloodletting time can more or less be summarized as "There’s a photograph of them together." Oh and I think one ten second flashback. Then just a few brief flashbacks literally as she was getting ready to carve him up. I’m not even certain it was needed either as it was already hemorrhaging blood from multiple orifaces. It barely even attacked them. 

I guess maybe you could take it as Ginka dealing levelheadedly with the idea that "people turned into monsters are already dead and there’s nothing we can do but put them out of their misery," which I’m perfectly fine with mind you, but that seems to fly in the face of everything they’ve been driving at with Akari and Luna. And if that’s what they were driving at, shouldn’t there have been some conflict over it? Where’s the undercurrent of psychological damage? I can’t even make the case for her being overly cheerful and bubbly to hide it because she was clearly just dealing with it. Which I know seems like an odd complaint from me, but without any kind of conflict, I don’t know what the point of it was. Hell. All Akari did was stand there and get used as an immobile widget for talking at. It doesn’t need to be a full-blown melodramatic wail-fest, but there’s been more to do over random strangers than there was killing someone a character actually knew.

    the next episode will be focus on seira so lets see why this girl act so bad and what kind of backstory she have

    Yeah I gotta agree that this show really lacks ambiguity. The Seira side of “They’re monsters because they were weak-hearted,” is much more convincing than Akari’s side of “They are still well-meaning people. Just turned into monsters,” because the show doesnt put in enough work to make the people who turn into Daemonia worthy of much sympathy. I mean the painter girl from the last episode basically just wanted to kill her classmates just cause they called her painting crappy and was jealous that they get more recognition for their work.

    The show should try to work in an angle where the people are being corrupted into Daemonia monsters by having their wishes granted in smaller doses. Like giving the people they hate bad luck where suddenly things start going more and more terrible for them and better for the person till things get out of control and the antagonist works their corruption thing to get the person to do something horrible upon which they become monsters that have to be stopped by Akari and crew. It gives Akari’s thoughts about fighting the Daemonia and her ability to see into the monsters hearts more meaning as well as making the central conflict between Akari and Seira more convincing.

    Also I’m super tired of Akari always moping about her friend with the glasses that she killed in the first episode. For god’s sake she was super jealous of Akari to the point where she looked like she was going to stab her to death with the scissors she was holding.

    Ginka’s all about temperance, so her reaction to things this episode makes sense. I think her DEALING WITH IT is a bit harder for her than she lets on, but what was shown this ep is perfectly in character for her. Unfortunately it really did make this whole episode lack impact. That and focusing too much on Old Dudes (Or College Girls) Who Will Never Appear Again. Let’s not do that a third time, ok show?
