Silver Spoon #01 — Eggs Come From Butts
July 11th, 2013
If you were already aware of this, you’re apparently ahead of city folk in Japan.
We do not ask about why a Chinese streaming site with its hardcoded subs was the first one available. Edit: Also, I tried to give C3 five minutes to amuse me, but I couldn’t make it even that far. The jazz trumpet solo in the background was just too much although other things like cheap-as-hell flashbacks and yet another obnoxious protagonist shout of "Eeeeeeeeeeh!?" did not help matters either. Smoking salvia before you start composing is not a good thing, musical directors.
Impressions:
I think the defining moment of this episode for me was how just godawful that classroom introduction scene was. A minute straight of just sitting there as characters introduced themselves and then shock and surprise when they were all grouped together by chance. The first part was bad enough without the second practically having the director standing over the audience’s shoulder, shaking them and saying "Look! Look! We just introduced all these people who’re now thrown together totally by chance!" Well, it’s not like after the godawful splash screens and shouting protagonist I really expected much in the way of subtlety anyway.
Speaking of the protagonist, he hits the trifecta of shouty, constantly complaining, and painfully stupid. So what luck that it never leaves his head! Maybe it’s some kind of cultural thing that Japanese have no idea about agriculture but ye lords, I think even for them, "eggs come from butts!? Butts are gross!" is pushing past the points of believability. And while we’re talking about butts, unsurprisingly for your standard noitaminA drama, the technical side of things is butts too. The humor is approximately 100% him shouting in surprise either out loud or in his head and the visuals do nothing to make things better.
If I’m being especially harsh, it’s because there are about half a dozen shows today that had better episodes last week and I don’t feel like spending any more of my time listening to an obnoxious kid shout as he learns a valuable lesson that hard work can overcome your newfound revulsion to eggs because he previously thought they were osmosed out of a chicken’s stomach or something.
