What was this, Silver Link?
This dinosaur of a laptop is having trouble even keeping track of its own wireless. I’m not even going to try ripping video. Find the OP yourselves.
Impressions:
What the hell was this, Silver Link? This was pathetic. This isn’t your A game. Did we get scared by Type Moon? Decide that we had to play it safe? Just decided to be lazy? Spent too much money on the OP? Whichever it is, it was far from good. Slow, generic, cliche, etc. Yeah, I get the whole gimmick of Illya, crazy, obsessive, clingy girl turning into a cutesy magical girl thing, but that’s not going to cut it, especially after Carnival Phantasm, and that’s really just about all that this episode has. Well, that and some truly godawful other cliches all packed in to the gills. And other FSN references aren’t going to cut it either.
Technical side’s okay, I guess, but I expect a whole lot more from Silver Link’s artistic direction, which this was very badly lacking. Art and animation is about as boring as you can get without being outright cheap. Some of the jokes aren’t bad, but Rin shouting and Ruby’s obnoxious nasally voice are involved with almost all of them which just makes things more painful than they need to be. The fight between Rin and Luvia could have also been a time for them to show off some flair and all we got instead was a little beam spam.
I’m disappointed then. Silver Link might pick it up a lot in the coming episodes. It wouldn’t be the first time they did strange things like blowing the budget on episode 2 or 3, but all we’ve got here so far is a rather generic and cliche magical girl show with Type Moon’s label slapped haphazardly on top of it without any of Silver Link’s usual artistic skill.

Except that this is exactly what happens… in Chapter 1. Most studios burn through source material like a bushfire in an episode but here they have done exactly ONE manga chapter in 20 minutes.
The quality of animation leaves something to be desired, particularly when you realise that this was done poorly: http://tenka.seiha.org/images2013/illya1/26.jpg
The right ear is wrong. But still, it is nice to see 2 grown women cosplaying as magical girls doing aerial combat over Fuyuki… falling out of the sky.
And sorry to burst your bubble, but the show is going to stutter between boringly slow exposition and Noble Phantasm spamming just like the source material.
PS. It only starts getting better in Zwei.
