Da Tea Live! #07 — The Anemic Wiggle

May 11th, 2013

Shake those hips.

Impressions:

Pretty dull and blatantly introductory episode to two new characters, but they’re not well connected, and especially not so far as the main characters are concerned, so it was pretty much like two half episodes just chucked together with an almost manic swap between tones. Bloody massacre in an alley followed immediately by 80s sitcom intro theme intro. At least their pianist was apparently having a blast. That’s someone. I guess. The music at the end of the episode when Origami was getting felt up was also strange enough for me to note it. That whole scene was too stretched out to be properly scary though, to say nothing of going right into the lovey dovey ED.

Anyway, we’ve got the intro to Mana, a transfer into Origami’s squad of jobbers and claims to be Shido’s brother so ges straight into the harem, and Tokisaki who eats people and has a clock eye. You’d think the latter would at least fulfill my lust for violence more, but she’s oddly just kind of boring so far. I think it’s because she’s too obviously evil and the entire cast is completely oblivious to it fr the first twenty or so minutes of the episode. The entire episode is spent waiting for her to do something, and all she does is eat some generic punks with the big shocking twist just being that Mana killed her in the alley… but she came back. No matter how much the characters look floored about it, after most of them have been shown to be capable of leveling cities when they lose their binkies, a second case of zombie-ism is really not that jaw dropping.

Next Episode:

Underwear.

They’re INTENTIONALLY not showing her violent side. It’s kinda obvious.

“I think it’s because she’s too obviously evil and the entire cast is completely oblivious to it fr the first twenty or so minutes of the episode”

And how exactly are they supposed to know? She didn’t exactly eat anyone in front of them……

“The entire episode is spent waiting for her to do something, and all she does is eat some generic punks with the big shocking twist just being that Mana killed her in the alley”

It’s called an intorductory episode. Thye’re aren’t exactly known to be action-packed.

“but she came back. No matter how much the characters look floored about it, after most of them have been shown to be capable of leveling cities when they lose their binkies, a second case of zombie-ism is really not that jaw dropping.”

Because you don’t know the whole story about it yet. Again, introductory episode. :P

Just as there’s no rule that says dogs can’t play basketball, there’s no rule that says introductions have to be uneventful. Her characterization was obvious about 60 seconds after she showed up (or if you want to be pedantic, nearly two months ago when the OP first played). Half an episode of nothing but driving her thin archetype home was really not needed.

      • Shinji103 says:

It IS needed because that’s what she’s planning, unless you’d rather they spend a mere five minutes on her before she suddenly starts going psycho crazy. What’s that called again? Oh right, RUSHED.

If they’d done that, you’d just be complaining “they took five minutes before she tried to kill everybody, thereby rushing her character” or something. I guess there’s no pleasing some people.

And by the way, there’s no rule that says an introductory episode has to be eventful either. In fact, 90% of the time they’re NOT eventful, because that’s the decades-long tried-and-proven way of doing it.

But it’s not like I’m taking your complaints to heart since you’re literally ALWAYS saying an episode or movie is bad and rarely say otherwise. If I came here to take your advice on anime, I’d never be watching anything. I’m pretty much here just for the screenshots. :)

I haven’t watched this episode yet (neither have I read your take on it for that matter) but with the little promo material available from MONTHS ago, I pretty much deducted she’s probably a psychopath disguised in sheep’s clothing while she’s at school. If there’s really nothing more to her for the entire episode spent on her, then boy, that would be really bad. And wouldn’t do any good to Shinji’s arguments.

Also, while I’m at it, isn’t it kinda ironic that a medium where can tell a character’s one-dimensional personality based on their looks alone is so fond of telling you about their personalities for entire episodes (perhaps even involving flashback segments because as well all know, characters are developed in the past) without adding much to the first impression?

        • Shinji103 says:

Sooo, if it’s all hinted in the promotion material, why bother with introductions at all? Why not just suddenly have the good guys fighting off psycho Kurumi with no explanation how we got there whatsoever? If the promo material made it all unnecessary, after all. *rolls eyes*

And Kurumi, one-dimensional? HAW. I’ll admit I have a bit of an advantage here since I read the light novels, but still, that’s a pretty know-it-all statement considering she’s had, what half an episode of screentims about?

I’ll never understand peoples’ need to act like they know the score before the game is over…….

        • algorithm says:

Anime is deep. Even deeper when it’s harem. Those girls need some solid reason to crave the dick after all.

        • Aroduc says:

The rest of this show could be amazing, and this would still have been a fairly boring episode that could have had the vast majority of the first half simply cut out with little to no loss. It’s not a bad thing at all to have character’s archetype be easily identifiable. It is to spend so much time dwelling on it instead of getting to the obvious.

I’m also pretty sure that “Hey, here’s some bad guys… And they fight!” is how most episodes of the DCU went, so I’m not really seeing a huge problem with that approach either.

“I’ll never understand peoples’ need to act like they know the score before the game is over…….”

Knowing the score before the game is over lets you how the game is going before it ends. And this game needs some time outs, substitutions and the ejection of the coach at the very least.

Also, I do know you that you meant the “final score” but my point is the same.

Shinji, i’d let it go. This is ARODUC. This sort of criticism and negativity is what makes his blog special.

    • Shinji103 says:

Lol, I know. I just can’t help poking the proverbial blog bear every now and then. :D

  • Jinzilla says:

    The directing in this show fucking sucks. ;_;

Breaking News: This show fucking sucks!

    • algorithm says:

Go watch Shingeki no Kyojin. They are using speedlines to make stills move. They also manage to ruin almost every iconic scene so far.

      • jingoi says:

        Enjoying Kyojin.

The solid reason most harem girls crave generic MC’s twig is……that’s what the otaku want.
