Yuruyuri #24 — Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

September 17th, 2012

I don’t remember Breasty being a dwarf. Nor do I think dwarf breasts have missiles.

Impressions:

The first segment had Kyouko haul out her cache of children’s toys, mostly centering around pranks trying to scare the others wih a squeaky snake. It was… uh… short? And not the worst thing that this show has done, but I’m not sure what else to say. In the aftermath of the rest of the episode, I think they just came up about 6 minutes short and pulled something out of the pile at random.

After that, we moved on to basically the entire cast performing a play of Snow White. It was also kind of okay, but unfortunately, they just used it as a vehicle to rehash all the standard character jokes instead of going all out with it. Himawari has large breasts, Sakurako steals Kyouko’s feedings for Ayako, Chitose nosebleeds, Kyouko eats bush, etc. It’s more of a try than the show usually gives, but it would’ve probably been improved by just dropping the play thing entirely. Although then they wouldn’t be able to have they have the entire cast bow to the audience’s thunderous applause as the OP plays… again. Good lord, that was about eight levels of self-indulgent.

Final thoughts at the bottom.

Final Thoughts:

I think that they did improve a little bit on the first season. Or maybe that’s just the power of lowered expectations. Still, the Glasses were all but thrown out of the show entirely and that earns it a number of points. That’s not enough to bring it into the realm of a consistently good comedy though. All they really did was cut out the absolute worst parts and keep on trucking with more or less the same everywhere else. The jokes remain far too repetitive wihout usually particularly good delivery/direction in the first place. The introductory segmens with Whose-Her-Face remained the best part of most episodes. Would that they showed a fraction of the wit in the rest of the episodes that they showed in those. Alas.

So better, but still probably a few steps away from ‘good.’ It could mainly use a little better direction, in both the writing and directorial sense. Most episodes just change the setting and topic, but at their core, are still "Group (X) hangs out at (Y) and talks about (Z)." Some things actually happening, even at just the episodic sitcom level, would help ease the tedium a lot. …And better jokes/delivery wouldn’t hurt either. It’s not a terrible show though, and if you enjoyed the first season, I’d expect you to enjoy the second, but it’s still missing the creativity and variety it’d need to be a consistently funny show.

“I think that they did improve a little bit on the first season. ”

Stopped reading right there. The first season was the best this show had to offer, from the first episode right until… Akari and the witch shared a kiss. Since then, YrYr forgot what made the first few episodes tantalizing. Stopped watching when the fanservice stopped.

    Akarin is a nice girl.
