Skip Beat! #01 — Subtle Imagery And You
October 6th, 2008
About as subtle as a beached whale.
New Season Disclaimer:
I’ll make a post for almost all new series (barring sequels) with a wrap-up and bullet point opinion of each once the premier week is over. Remember that these are just my kneejerk reactions to the first 20 minutes of shows, many of which in genres that I don’t even particularly like, but I do believe in giving every new series at least an episode to interest me.
Impressions:
Somehow, this show manages to look and feel more like a show from the mid 90s than Casshern did and probably cost about as much to produce as Xebec’s 5-2. I swear that Super GALS, made almost a decade ago, looks better than this… or at the very least, doesn’t look completely washed out. It firmly… one might even say resoundingly… plants itself into the ‘girlish romance’ subgenre though, firmly aimed at those that can’t get enough of their doe-eyed girls fighting to break out of the kitchen and win back the jackass that has rejected them. I can barely stomach that when all involved are vampires trying to eat each other. Pop idols though? Forget about it. I was tuning out by 10 minutes in, and Kyoko’s impotent little tantrum hardly convinced me otherwise. All the imagery around that scene was just painful to watch too. Subtlety is a virtue. A minute of throwing ‘good feeling cherubs’ and devils unlocking the evilness in Kyoko’s heart… a little much.
Maybe Hinano will pick this up… what with having the ovaries and other assorted plumbing that seems to correlate relatively well with enjoying these kinds of shows, and I’m pretty sure there are enough fans of the manga around to at least give a somewhat more educated opinion on how this is going to develop than me. I’m not sticking around for another episode though. Amazingly enough, I’d rather watch Ga-rei or Macademy than this.

About 6 months back I read the first few manga chapters and gave up on this because it was rather average. After some people kept raving on about it I tried it again.
Let me tell you this, the first 1-2 episodes will be absolute crap to what comes later on. Looking at the screens here they probably should’ve condensed the start more.. but at least it seems they will be staying true to the manga.. and considering that 95% of the manga is fucking awesome that’s a good thing.
Also I wouldn’t worry about Shou that much…
