Dusk Maiden of Amnesia #05 — Festival of Cliches
May 7th, 2012
"Hey guys, I found an old school festival template. Want to just toss that up instead?"
Uh, not sure where this post went. I distinctly remember writing it, posting it, then going back and correcting it because I forgot to delete the next ep preview part of the template. And now there is no record of it existing besides the images being on the server already. Maybe there was a hiccup in the database. Oh well.
Impressions:
Anyway, the digest version is that the episode was quite bad. There was some slightly clever visual direction, particularly the medical dummy leading up to the two Kanoes imagery, but that was it. Besides that, it was an entire episode eschewing the cliffhanger from last week of the other ghost stalking the school to focus on Kirie’s inferiority complex. And there’s nothing I like more than characters sulking. Besides that, a dull-as-hell school festival episode, complete with obligatory maid cafe, obligatory haunted house, and obligatory school festival montage. And then Kirie learned the valuable lesson that it doesn’t matter whether you’re alive or a ghost if you flash a little nipple, guys don’t care about anything else. Exciting. I’m glad we took time out from the already mostly-absent plot to cover that.

It’s a mystery/comedy manga but the anime has cut out all the mysteries so far for some reason (not enough fanservice?).
The sleepover and cursed rock in previous episode for example lead to some very important reveals about Yuuko’s past/overarching storyline but once again they were cut away for some generic explanation instead.
Overall I’m very disappointed in the anime, there was potential here but they seem to be satisfied with doing pure fanservice episodes while removing every single reference to the main plot from the story. In this episode they should’ve introduced a couple of characters who would’ve lead to another mystery during the school festival.
