Hidamari Sketch x365 #13 — Natsume <3 Sae
September 27th, 2008
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Sae.
I’m rather intoxicated at the moment thanks to a bit of Thor’s Hammer, some Watermelon Smirnoff (mmmmm tastes like Jolly Ranchers) and assorted other alcoholic beverages, so my apologies for… well… whatever.
Impressions:
This episode was nowhere near as interestingly done as the previous one, so in comparison, was actually somewhat boring. After the big lead up, I was somewhat expecting a really big finale like the very well done first episode, but sadly, that was apparently not to be. It was still alright, but there wasn’t a whole ton to actually talk about. Shared memories and Natsume coming out of the closet, such as it is, to show that she’s Sae’s fan. Obvious to practically everybody, so the reveal really lacks any sort of major interest aside from filling in some pretty extraneous gaps.
Otherwise, we just got everybody reminiscing about all the fun times they had together and then a big bath. There was perhaps a little too much focus on a relatively secondary or even tertiary character for a finale, but it’s not like Hidamari is especially plot driven either, so it’s really not that big of a deal.
Final thoughts at the bottom.
Final Thoughts:
Man, whatever. It was pretty much the same as the first season. I still thought that it could use a bit more character inteaction and actual drama instead of everybody sitting around at the dinner table and talking about their day, but it’s not like I was especially surprised about the quantity of that either. I’d say it could have used more Yoshinoya and Hiro, but honestly, what show couldn’t?
I did think that they were a bit too slavish in their devotion to the opening and ending scenes. Series jokes or nods are alright when they make actual sense, but just tossing Yuno into the bath to sigh for 30 seconds at the end of every episode really served absolutely no purpose andjust stretched out the episode, usually without any meaningful content aside from showing Yuno in the bath. There still the sense of "if you’ve seen one episode, you’ve seen them all" which is either good or bad depending on your personal point of view, buti it’s the reason that I tend to steer clear of the genre. While enjoyable, I really did run out of things to say aside from basically summarizing and adding some complaint about how they’re abusing Hiro.
Oh well, c’est la vie. I wouldn’t mind watching another season at all, but I really don’t know if I’d ever attempt to cover such.
