Scarlet Fragments #01 — Where the Wild CG Roams
March 5th, 2012
At least it’s one less first episode to cover next month.
Impressions:
As you might surmise from the watermark, this doesn’t actually start until April 2nd, but the ever so compelling first episode aired early. It also began with a giant CG bus and then CG leaves before getting to the first animated thing that wasn’t part of the background, which was soon followed by CG goo beasts menacing the heroine by… sitting there… so you know Deen put every single bit of their effort into this one. That is being a little mean. Animation’s barely there but at least the art’s pretty consistent and the backgrounds are nice. Music’s completely forgettable, but I can’t recall it bothering me either.
All the rest was about as boringly generic and stereotypical as you can get. There’s spikey gruff red-haired bishie, hot head bishie, quiet bishie, glasses bishie, all centralized around milquetoast female lead whose two jobs are to stare in doe-eyed surprise at everything and have the rest of the cast dote on her hand and foot. This time, they’re also joined by Exposition Grandmatm, here to tell you all about what you just saw. Even the magic spell was the usual generic nonsense. Why can’t they bust out something like "Try this Western Spell, ‘Hokusu Pocusu!’" instead of the blood paragraphs about gods of the east, west, north, south, south by south west, north by south east, etc… repeated multiple times while CG goo monsters sit there… sitting there. Or at least use a Dragon Slave chant.
I’ve lost track of this post at this point, but that should tell you just how much of an impression that this show leaves. Think of it like the damp reverse harem noodle slapping against the fridge. You’ll probably just leave it, hoping that the dog will eat it, but even he knows that he’s just getting some uncooked and bland starch that can be approximated by leaving a saltine in water for 10 minutes. Again, I’ve forgotten if this metaphor was going anywhere. Maybe I’m hungry for pasta.

No bishie joke? I am disappointed.
