Guilty Crown #05 — “By The Way, We Have A Death Laser”
November 10th, 2011
Wait, what?
Impressions:
And since IG apparently blew the budget on the gravity fight last week, it’s off to ‘wacky’ terrible antics and training this week, because Shuu has apparently forgotten how he leapt thirty feet in the air and is now back to being only barely capable of running, so of course they go from him being inept against a random grunt with a knife to "an impossible training exercise" which he of course aces by the power of attacking a random bystander while they were trying to innocently drink on the sidelines. I’m not sure why everybody was so impressed by that. It’s also a tad annoying that they’re playing off this blood transfusion thing between Gai and Inori as some kind of sordid sex scandal to make Shuu even more angsty. How is that even possible? The kid is already a bottomless cavern of self-loathing.
And then there’s the meat of the episode, the godawful antics surrounding Ayase. Let’s just recap this sequence of events. She’s assigned to watch over him, he sees the wheelchair and takes pity on her so she gives him a concussion for it. She then apparently strips him naked and hides his clothes, so she can scream and slap him when he walks out naked. At this point, the magnetic connection to his penis has been established and she can no longer show up on screen without his body colliding into hers and her clothes being knocked off. I’m actually kind of impressed that he didn’t notice a girl in a wheelchair as he was crying through his tears and collided into her with enough to send her about 8 feet away from it.
Oh yeah, and in case there was any doubt about who was evil despite the show’s attempts to occasionally present the good guys as not-so-nice, the baddies have an orbital cannon that they’ve begun firing on urban targets. Seriously. Not 15 seconds after the bomber reappears and Ayase glares at him like he’s Gai’s one true love, hinting that he may in fact really be an evil bomber what bombs at midnight, they suddenly pull an orbital cannon out of their asses. Between this and Blood-C, I’m starting to wonder if the writers at IG are just stoned 100% of the time.
