Duals of the Underworld #01 — Head Pops

April 4th, 2026

Why am I reminded of Blood-C?

Impressions:

The awkwardness of the setting isn't improved much by the animation. Maybe the pacing of having it go from magical medieval village to everybody over five minutes instead of five pages helps a little bit, but you're still jumping right from gossipping about dragons to literally everybody leaping from helicopters while all the Truman Show villagers whip out glocks, but also magical teeth monsters bite everybody's heads off for some gratuitous villager jellification in order to meet its edgelord pre-reqs.

Can't say I was all that impressed though, and I'd pin the reasons for largely the same as Mao, the characters. We rotated things around. People got their heads eaten in the middle of the episode instead of at the start, but it had the same deadly sin of the protagonist spending most of the episode either delivering or listening to exposition. More action and animation at least, but undercut by the weirdness of spec ops airdropping in out of nowhere while also wanting to be all magic. Pick a lane. But I think the real downer was the last five minutes, where all the action tailed off severely, and it was once again a dour faced dude infodumping while the protagonist gaped like a fish and went "huh?" before ending with a dramatic and very elongated recitation of the second part of the show's title. Behold, your pokemon! …And then it just ends. Was… Was this supposed to be an exciting moment?
