High School Funny Face Club #01 — With Help From Cocaine
January 9th, 2026
I feel overstimulated.
Impressions:
It's certainly trying to bring back the 80s, which seems to be noitaminA's side project lately, much more than the recent Urusei Yatsura revival. Especially the character designs. Everyone has giant poofy hair, chins like a ton of bricks, and eyes that are either way too large or way too small with no in-between. There's just one little rap at the start and then it's entirely 80s, right down to the animators snorting a terrifying amount of cocaine. I think they were afraid of anybody accusing this show of not being chaotic enough. Or loud enough for that matter. There's a throughline of characters yelling the entire episode. Not even always as reaction to anything, simply yelling to yell. The existence of silence displeases god… or something.
It's definitely not the kind of comedy that gets made much these days, though I'm not sure I lament that. While I can appreciate the sheer chaos and absurdism, it's just nonstop noise and random things happening. There's more to a good comedy than just "RANDOM THING HAPPENS LOUDLY!" Contrast is the big one. When the noise is nonstop, audio and visual, it blends together. Characters and story too. The two girls are the only distinctive ones, being the designated straight men, ironically, to either giggle or pratfall in reaction, instead of excitedly yelling about everything and/or yelling as they do a random thing. It's a wall of stimulation that is likely to cause epilepsy in lab rats.
