How dare she have a bad father.
Impressions:
I'm starting to get to the point where I'm considering abandoning Tuesdays and just doing a random variety post, because these originals are… not good, and rapidly getting worse. This episode started awful, and somehow managed to get worse as it went. It began pretending to be a gameshow where it was asking childish riddles like the old "Dead man in a room with a puddle. How?" kind of thing, but immediately ditched that to just have it announce each character's deep dark evil secret. It did this by arbitrarily announcing new rules every three minutes, so we got constant interruptions to re-explain the rules. For a quiz show. Because it couldn't even commit to the one bit. And yet, for being so dialogue heavy, the direction was also awful. I couldn't stop being distracted by how they were supposedly talking to each other, while almost always facing directly forward. Never looking at each other. Never listening to each other. Never moving. Really going for that awful VN feel, I guess.
It was especially godawful at the end when they're pulling entire totems out of their asses and randomly declaring that this doubles their score, gives them another chance, resets the wheel and chases off the whammies. Wait, let's call up to the booth to confirm! Yes, the booth says that it doubles their score, resets the wheel, etc etc etc. Also, almost all of their deep dark secrets were just dumb jokes. Only exceptions were for the gamer guy, who's out there being a serial killer apparently, because as everybody knows, more is better, and blondie, whose horrible secret is that her father was abusive. Yes, that's the horrible secret that destroys her. Not that she ever did anything wrong, but that her dad was a bag of dicks. One dude married his student. One murdered a classmate. And she's the big dramatic one for having a terrible parent. Sure, writers. Sure.
