I don't condone it, but I do understand it.

I did do a quick glance at Panty and Stocking's new season. I still feel like I should like it, but the humor still annoys me. I admit I was mostly curious for the resolution of the infamous cliffhanger/twist at the end of the previous season, but it scored no points by that being immediately revealed to have been absolutely nothing. One was being mind-controlled, the other was revived. Both turned kaiju sized, one had a dildo rammed into them to fix them. Pick whichever you prefer. It doesn't really matter which.

Impressions:

I'm not totally on board with this either, as it's still being fairly inoffensive low scale shounen, but I am finding it a bit interesting that they are diverging from the source in the way shows used to. Which isn't a lot to pull attention or be notable, but it is unusual in this day and age. They're also not separating themselves that much. The start and end are entirely the same. Yes, they do indeed accidentally unleash a haunted mannequin onto the city to terrorize everybody. But the entire middle part where it goes crazy and decides to stab some kids? That really seems like it was always the meat of the story, but no. In the manga, they just tell it that they're all friends, and it never has an existential crisis and tries to murder everybody.

So in that sense at least, they are picking up on what makes an actual interesting story, horror even, and turning a banal lesson about befriending an anatomical dummy into something a little more exciting. But it still feels like it belongs next to Scooby Doo or Pretty Cure as far as the audience age and maturity level goes. Utterly harmless, but aside from actually spicing up the source instead of slavish devotion to it, it's not doing all that much notable or worthy of discussion.
