To Be Hero X #02 — Piano BBQ

Burgers taste best on a Bösendorfer.

Impressions:

Let's start with the bad. The really, really, really bad. The cliffhanger from last week was nothing. Just a dream. Absolutely nothing whatsoever. It's not even foreshadowing or a premonition. It's just literally random nothingness to jerk the audience around. This is so absurdly bad, stupid, and beyond the pale and puts the entire start of the episode on such a godawful note. It's insulting, awful, and I hate it. Thankfully, the rest of the episode was better, and the action remains amazing, both the 3D and the 2D, with a very Spider-verse portal fight scene in both styles. I do wish they'd commit more to the experimental stuff though.

That said, I still think they missed some easy lay-ups with this as Moon's episode. For starters, the way that the original Nice's (boy)friend was gaslit and jerked around? That really seems like it needed more focus and a better hero moment from Nice 2.0. Second, the whole faking her death thing being a corporate plan from the start really should have been something he pulled on the spot to give her her freedom from them/him. It'd have been a great way to exert his freedom from the suits and actually show he cares about her, even if it's a life without him, because to that point, the whole prisoner forced romance thing along with his fanboying over her was pretty creepy.

The various lore stuff is whatever, if they're going to do more with it. I already noted it last week, but Nice's power being "perfection" and Moon's wormhole powers being warped by public perception to only work around him kind of strike me as narratively lazy and prone to deus ex machina, but it hasn't been that bad so far. But it's been worked in relatively well without a whole infodump or ten minute exposition about power levels, so still far from egregious, but we'll see. Just don't even pull any crap like that fake-out cliffhanger ever again, damn it.
