Nier Automata v1.1a #17 — Deja Vu

August 2nd, 2024

"Pretty sure I've seen this episode before… yep."

Impressions:

Remember back to March, 2023? When we first saw this episode? Back in episode 6? Well, it hasn't changed much, and you know how much I love both recycling old episodes and flashbacks, so… great. Especially with the long, completely unanimated intro and outtro scenes that were just voice overs to empty space. Enthralling animation work here.

I guess at least it's not just completely re-running the episode and instead filling in random scenes through it, but I can't say that I feel like it actually added much of anything either. More of an Endless Eight kind of episode. The big reveal is that the #2 android that looked identical to 2B is the new one, A2, that now has all her memories? Is that actually a reveal? Or maybe that there was a villainous monologue which is why A2 decided to go complete nihilist… and then both she and the antagonist girls I guess decided to chill out for a couple hundred years.

The stage play and with it this story happen 4 years before the game.

2B is a flat character and a puppet following orders. Playthrough 2 is all about demystifying her, even if a lot is doing the same things again while walking right behind her. Keeping her around would only lead to a repeat of 2A´s story who is the original Nier 2 protagonist. The play predated the game by 2.5 years and was written as development began.

Taro writes for Japan first (and only?) and the play was hardly lost media over there due to a DVD release so he had zero interest for what could have been his final game to just remake it. It´s continued importance is also why it could get a LN, manga and whatever these 2 summaries are.
2B´s death motives the other leads for the rest of the plot. That´s why she dies. It makes the real half of the story happen and her death is well received by critics and players.
