My Deer Friend #06 — Putting Text on Screen

August 7th, 2024

Not really clear what you were going for here.

While I was tempted to skip Shy on Monday, it was off for the week anyway due to the Olympics. Which will just make it easier to be done with entirely next week if it continues to be terrible. Also, the final show of the summer, that vampire babysitter thing, is supposed to air today, but it is MIA, and I'm not sure I really care.

Impressions:

I'm not sure what the strategy is with announcing that instead of doing a normal half of an episode, they're going to be doing a series of rapid fire one-off jokes with zero interconnectivity whatsoever. That's different from the usual… how exactly? Because we went from the barest minimum to none? Or is this a dumping ground for all the 4-panel jokes you couldn't fit in elsewhere? Or just an excuse to put a title up on screen every 20 seconds? Or perhaps just some subtle padding by having an extra twenty transitions.

The second half at least got weird again, though I feel like it takes some effort for a character to shed their skin and another to start wearing it and manage to not make that either particularly funny nor horrifying. Then it tried to milk as much yelling as possible out of "shikanoko" sounding kind of like "tsuchinoko", which is an urban legend kind of cryptid thing not unlike a jackalope, but a fat snake. Except this was just a ball of antlers that they kept yelling "WHAT IS THAT THING." Which made it a whole episode of half-assed punchlines and yelling. Not… one of the stronger ones.
