Undead Unluck #01 — Big Lungs
October 6th, 2023
For all the yelling, obviously.
Impressions:
Standard Jump opening episode here. Quite a bit of animation strength was on display, but as I mentioned in the season preview, David Production likes to go all out on opening episodes and then use slideshows for the episodes to follow. Better than the glut of reincarnation shows that never manage to get even that far, or spend the entire thing exhaustively explaining the setting? Absolutely. No doubt whatsoever there. But still all the same general issues with Jump stuff, particularly the nonstop screaming. Good god, the screaming. Pity this poor actress's lungs, please. After a quiet, almost artistic intro, I think it was six or seven straight minutes of just her yelling. It's exhausting.
It's pretty expected and by the numbers for Jump action things all the same, right down to the over the top tragic flashback and gravity defying giant chest. The real super power in the show is whatever's holding that bra together. Probably the same thing keeping her hat on despite animating it getting buffeted around by wind. People who have an innate immunity to the shounen yelling are probably going to be fairly happy with the episode, but my ears are still ringing, and it's hard to feel positive about that. Plus, the narrative elements of this episode are virtually nonexistent compared to something like Vanishing Line with its similar setup of a roided up slab of meat taking in a depressed orphan girl. Even just the fight and action scene there was more than just overanimated running and then splashes of blood or zoomed out explosions. Probably not a great comparison since this is trying to be more comedic, but its efforts are obnoxious to me, and both those characters were a lot more engaging instead of offputting to me.
