The Apothecary Diaries #02 — Roofying the Harem

Why was coating it in chocolate necessary again?

Impressions:

Hold up here. Did she make some off-the-shelf black market Spanish Fly, or a roofie? Because it sure seemed like the latter. I will say that the direction and animation in this show is doing  a lot of heavy lifting and is quite effective, especially on the comedy side. Lots of little cute amusing moments where one characte or another is excited or frustrated that wouldn't work via the now usual screamed at the top of the lungs punchline or boinging background splash. It also helps that it's not dwelling on any one thing for very long, moving quickly from scene to scene. The moment to moment in this show tends to be pretty solid.

But the overall story stuff? That I'm less sure on. We're apparently ending every episode with a tease for the mystery in the next… except this mystery was just a random side thing introduced and resolved in about two minutes before it's back to court shenanigans. "Hey, maybe don't burn weird plants." And some of the exposition is really wanting too. "As we both are aware, you're a honeypot for lusty concubines." Uh, okay. A bit weird, and I'm glad that this explanation lasted only 10 seconds instead of being explained and then re-explained and then re-re-explained as other shows would, but it was still a rather weird interjection out of nowhere before, again, back to generic court shenanigans. Mind you, the shenanigans and the characters are still decent enough that I'm okay with at least finishing out the day on another episode here, but I don't think I'd say the same if the animation wasn't doing as good a job as it is in being expressive in its humor.
