The Apothecary Diaries #01 — “Oh Gee. Here I Am Being Kidnapped”
October 21st, 2023
A little blasé here, aren't we?
Look what finally showed up, a mere 2.5 hours late. Not to spoil/read ahead, but each episode is pretty solidly contained and its own thing, so despite three airing today, I'm fine splitting them up and/or calling it quits if/when I get tired of it.
Impressions:
The tone of this show is really weird to me. The main character is kidnapped, sold into slavery at the royal court, and is complaining about how intellectually unstimulating having to do laundry all day is. We're only about three minutes in, and I skipped over the visit to the local whorehouse. Sure, it's probably better than if they had gone for a super traumatic/dramatic kidnapping scene and threats of sexual violence, but it's a bit deadpan for… you know, being kidnapped from home and sold into slavery. "Oh gee. Here I am stuffed in a basket. Well, that's what happens here in ancient not-China." I guess that made the endless internal monologue a little less painful, and it's not like anybody else here was providing stimulating conversation.
From there, it becomes a mystery involving a baby plague and dramatic overanimated camera spins around the local heartthrob that all the laundry girls are swooning over, who's tricking them into revealing which ones are literate, so Maomao can Explain It All™. Stop using lead in makeup, people. Or mercury. Whatever it is. Still, you'd think when only the nursemaid and the babies this one particular Typhoid Mary handled got sick, they should be able to track it down to at least "keep it away from this one person." Not the most compelling of mysteries, but also, unlike, say, that Jump detective show, didn't involve anybody repeatedly screaming and weird nonsense crazy serial killers with hyper convoluted yet basic murder weapons. Or jedi mind powers. Well, I guess now that we're centered, right on to the next and finding out if I can stomach a third.
