Overtake! #01 — Twitter Ruins Another Life

October 1st, 2023

Just get some therapy, dude.

There's two more shows today, with three episodes (the witch one got a twofer apparently). I think get to one more before I need to be elsewhere for a long while, so probably the other stat screen one and save the two episodes of witch fanservice for later.

Impressions:

Are any racing shows actually about racing? Let me rephrase that. Are any racing shows going to actually show any races? Sure, this was about racing. It was the filler text put in to pad out the ten minutes of melodrama about a magazine photographer with PTSD over taking pictures of people. Why exactly? Dunno. Involves water and angry Twitter posts. Which I'll admit wasn't executed in the worst of ways. But it was in between reading out the intro to possibly appropriately a magazine article introducing racing. You see, there's professionals trying to raise up people, but also hobbyists. And it's expensive, because there's lots of expenses. What are they? Well, let's list them out. And now let's list pre-race stuff they do. Oops, ran out of time for the actual race.

So okay, perhaps not all that different from any of these hobbyist kind of shows in that they're overly focused on explaining the minutia rather than it being just the thing that drives the characters and story. There is kind of some hints of a story here though, just not at all a racing one. Dude has PTSD and has a minor breakthrough. Struggling loner kid keeps trying and failing. It is pretty eye-rolling that both their hangups are entirely about being told "do your best," but failing and picking yourself up is more the kind of story I prefer to see than the far more typical of anime anxiety about even trying in the first place despite literally never once failing. Enough to stick with this? Highly doubt it as all the racing crap was boring as snot and the whole racecar drivers are the new male superstars of the teenage girl world is just plain silly. But it was a bit of a surprise to see this lean into aspirational melodrama instead of CGI cars.

The Wangan Midnight manga and anime are all about being in a car and racing. Also street racing scene itself and tuning. It is possible.
