Kingdoms of Ruin #01 — Gulag Muppets
October 6th, 2023
Uh… okay.
Impressions:
I could spend two paragraphs just listing out the utter nonsense that makes up this setting, but I'll restrain myself to just the high points. The witch in witch prison who has her own immaculately created muppets. The evil emperor who gives an entire speech about how the ultimate triumph over witches is the invention of the smartphone, which they should then use to livestream his ritual execution of someone he just kidnapped after sexually assaulting her while the entire mob cackles with glee. The evil empire who can teleport people anywhere they want at any time and completely nullify their powers, which apparently nobody knows about despite all that. The witch who's first response upon being teleported into the middle of a crowd is to declare that she always wanted to murder all of them and now she's going to.
There are some, uh, issues in the writing, would be the takeaway. And then again in the presentation, as if the muppets in the gulag didn't make that clear enough. And then all this ultra powerful technology is thwarted by the muppet girl swiping a phone and doing funny voices. So much for 2FA. How serious exactly are we supposed to be taking this, guys? We went from a gruesome ritualistic murder to a prison being run by an exaggerated stereotype of a cross-dresser being defeated by the power of chibi faces. So there are quite a few tone issues as well, particularly coming hot on the heels of the gratuitous dismemberment scene. I guess at least it's probably the most actually story-driven thing I've seen so far. Just all the details within it are… uh… better off not focused on?
