Hundred Girlfriends #01 — Screenshots You Can Hear
October 8th, 2023
I miss comedies that don't deafen me.
Impressions:
Mostly what this really convinced me of is that the orgasmic blushes and being covered in sweat are the modern day panty shots/boob bounces. Modern fanservice for the modern age. Not that the camera didn't creep right up the thigh to the panty line over and over. But even that's not the main focus of this show. Yelling and overreactions are. It's from Jump. Of course they are. You can probably practically hear the screenshots just by looking at them. Comedy by fiddling with the volume. And by fiddling, I mean slamming it to maximum and leaving it there. Oh for the days of shows like Pani Poni Dash or Milky Holmes that had actual narratives but were also filled with visual weirdness and sight gags along the way, or even in the background, instead of jokes like "YOU ARE REPEATING WHAT I JUST SAID!" and "THIS IS AN UNEXPECTED SITUATION!" Did nobody have a paper fan to slap each other? That would have really elevated things.
So… no, I was not amused by this comedy. The main thought I had was thinking about Duel Savior, because it too began with the protagonist lamenting how he asked 100 girls out and they all said no. Except back in 2004, that was a sign that you were kind of an ass and not serious about any of them, not that you were a hopeless romantic who needed to have girls rubbing themselves on you within the next five minutes. No, Duel Savior threw you into a pit with a golem and set you at war with the matriarchy and a murderously insecure sister, all of which made less noise than any of the perpetually orgasming fire alarms that comprise the cast of this show.

The manga is funnier than you will ever be.
