The Capable Cat #01 — Animating Commutes
July 7th, 2023
Is this like a right of passage to animate at GoHands?
Impressions:
Copy/paste everything I said about the production of that girl with glasses show. I don't know if it's talent, some eccentric billionaire funding things, or just a willingness to throw dozens of artists into the meatgrinder, but GoHands loves to make excessively good looking first episodes. Granted, their production always immediately falls off, but yeesh. And if it seems like I'm excessively harping on this, it's because it began with four straight minutes of generic walking to work shots. Between this and their other show, that's nearly eight goddamned minutes of excessively animated shots of people walking to school/work just from them.
Once again, I have to wonder what it was about this premise that made them feel like it needed this kind of effort. Granted, the production does certainly spice the tired concept up a little bit which makes some of the visual jokes work better than the usual smash cut to overreaction screaming. That the cat doesn't talk at all, not even in internal narration (well, mostly), also helps push it more towards visual gags. It does seem to understand humor at least somewhat, steering clear of fanservice shots when it could, as well as understanding cat behavior like sitting on people's faces in a way that shows ostensibly about pet cats, like that alien thing last season, didn't. It is a bit weird that they're trying to play off this lady as some kind of Liz Lemon failure of a human, but that's hardly unusual, and didn't work in 30 Rock either. I think it really needs some kind of at least episodic story to tie things together rather than existing as a series of isolated vignettes with upsetting production values.
