They sure like that one facial expression.
Impressions:
Comedy and horror often go hand in hand. Stuff like Stranger Things, Buffy, Supernatural, etc certainly would be very different if not for the levity. But this is a pretty puerile version of both. The jokes are all the dude overreacting in the typical flavor of screaming that has become endemic to anime 'comedy' in the last decade. And the horror is pretty much just body horror drawings. They go to a place where there's scary stuff, and scary things happen. No creeping dread. No investigation. No real narrative, not even to the level of Scooby Doo. There's one flashback to explain the kid's scary past and quest, and they tiptoe around the weird gloves the two other main characters wear, but that's as organic or as subtle as anything gets. It's almost what you'd expect from a flat out game tutorial.
It just feels lazy and a bit childish to me, though certainly nowhere near as much so as the various reincarnation RPG-world things. It doesn't help to have such an obnoxious protagonist either, who reacts to being strangled the same way that he reacts to the ghosts that he supposedly sees everywhere, or to bad driving. It all blends together into the one shot of him looking traumatized and screaming, whether th scene was meant to be funny or 'scary.' Sometimes confusing as well, when it suddenly shifts to a dramatic still of them running away from… the vanquished ghost? It's certainly the weakest of the three new shows today in any case.
