The Witch From Mercury #22 — Everybody Sulks, Pt 8

June 18th, 2023

See? You can draw people looking disheveled.

Impressions:

Hey, look on the bright side. There were no scenes of maudlin, melodramatic idiots sitting around having tea this week for the first time in like two months. They just sat around… not having tea, but still being maudlin and melodramatic. Not even about anything in particular. There's this 'sad' scene that's supposedly about Miorine and Suletta talking about their feelings, but neither of them say anything but idiotic platitudes. Nothing about gaslighting the other. Nothing but "we gotta do our bestest." Superficial, skin-deep tripe, but wouldn't ya know it, that instantly fixes her and gets her right out of sulking in her tent so she can proceed to… yell at her recovering father before all but vanishing from the episode again.

And doesn't that really say it all for the whole cast? Why are these idiots around? Why do we keep being reminded that Shaddiq, Elan, Chuchu, Guel, etc exist? Let's check in on Shaddiq in prison to… yell at him briefly for his grand plan of inciting random terrorists to attack? And Elan continues to sit in the corner of random scenes just to… be there. It's clear only Suletta's special protagonist power is the only thing that matters to let her give a second prosaic speech to Eri and Prospera. Oh, and speaking of them, they're doing the RPG last boss theme where they just squat on the final dungeon, waiting for somebody to show up to stop them. What a grand plan that is totally imminent crisis. Good lord, I just want this stupid thing to be over.

Good things piloting also translates into fencing skill

Only people with big sad are allowed to look disheveled. anyway maybe Im just stupid but I still don’t get why they act like Suletta did something wrong by killing that guy. I mean even in universe they acknowledge that miorine and her dad would have died if not for Suletta and while I would have preferred that outcome Im not sure why the characters are advocating for it

The end result of miorine’s semi off screen arc is basically

her:bro lately after each choice I make I leave a lot of dead bodies behind.
Suletta: Yeah bro but you got to keep moving. There are no optimal choices and you are bound to make mistakes. omelette and eggs, bro.
Her: yeah I guess you are right.

I think it was same in iron blooded orphans but stagnation is feared above all else and somewhere avoiding is an excuse to never reflect and just blindly keep moving.
