The Margarine Service #12 — “Shark is Shark”
June 27th, 2023
Uh… huh.
Summer rundown should be up tomorrow or Thursday, depending on how witty I am this evening. Yes, I know it's cutting it so close a couple shows have already had premieres.
Impressions:
The Independence Day scene was absolutely expected, but it was just an isolated reference. Less expected was the entire rest of the protagonist team being sidelined for quite literally Random Monster Team to show up and save the day. This was the laziest, crappiest alien invasion ever. They sent one scout ship and then waited for humanity to re-activate it so they could start their invasion with… I think maybe 17 naked soldiers. And Rubber's all "We have been preparing for years!" and pulls out four completely random dudes and a guitar out of his ass that shoots rocket launchers. Oh, and that Tengu thing? It was a country-covering ultra barrier. One use only. No asspulls here.
I'm not saying that I couldn't theoretically get behind this, but it's a bit out of left field, even for everything else that has happened. At the same time, I'm not sure what I would have said would have been a good ending for the show at this point though. At least realistically speaking. Could've just gone all out and animated the hell out of something. I doubt any character dramatically sacrificing themselves would've done it. But you'd still think they'd have let the cast actually do anything besides hitting a button that plays the Independence Day scene.

Like I said at the start of this series, fool me once CyGames, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
They can’t throw money around expecting that every show that they’re backing is going to be a guaranteed hit as we have seen here, which is clearly trying to copy the “wacky” comedy vibe that Akiba Maid War had but replacing the Yakuza “parody” with trying to spoof American action and sci-fi films. And yet, it fell into the same problems as that maid “comedy” and wasted even more talent in the process. They need to do better than this instead of resting on their UmaMusu/PriConne laurels and expecting everything they touch to turn into gold.
