The Heavenly Delusion #12 — Cracking the Vault

June 17th, 2023

For the first time, the vault kids were the stronger part of the episode.

Impressions:

At least they're coming to some kind of conclusion-ish thing here with the vault being attacked by… something, possibly just itself. Pretty explicit confirmation too that Maru is Tokio's kid (maru = circle), along with all the other stuff it's been not-so-subtly hinting at that the monsters are the vault kids with their mutations/powers set into overdrive. The issue is that I cannot see any way for this to wrap up in the next episode, and neither "go read the manga" nor "come back in 3 months or longer" are satisfying. At least something like "you're free now" is… sort of an ending for them.

Kiruko and Maru's side on the other hand? They finally find Kiruko's mentor and he immediately chains him up and starts sexually assaulting him and psychologically torturing him about his identity. I had been aware of this, but it was no less pleasant to sit through. At least replace it with a regular torture scene. Still get to be disturbing and deeply unpleasant without also being gratuitous and gross. But then we go back to the various other unnecessary child prostitutes and whatnot and it's hard to think that the gratuitousness isn't a 'feature,' which is just a deeply disappointing beat for their story to end on.
