I'm not sure why this episode exists.

Impressions:

For an origin story episode, this didn't elucidate much. They have amnesia, are magical girls, and fell into his lap after the purge began. And… uh… that was kind of it. They snuck out the countryside where they screwed around and lived the happy otaku life, telling tales about how nice Akihabara was. The girls weren't even the crazy lunatics back then that they are now. They awoken to their powers by… bad tailoring, I guess. It also is kind of weird having a whole "you're our hero who we will fight with no matter what" after the first two episodes of characters losing their wills to fight.

That left this a kind of weird episode to me. It wasn't about any otaku thing or aspect of otaku culture in general, didn't add anything to the story, nor develop the characters in any way, but it also certainly wasn't trying for much in the way of comedy or action either. It's the third time the troops have been rallied to fight for otaku culture, but this one wasn't driven by anything happening here, and largely took place in the past. It just felt really pointless and unneeded.
