World Superstar #01 — Actress Eye of Infinite Stage Lighting

April 9th, 2023

Uh, okay?

Impressions:

So… Girl plays the part of the villain so well that it traumatizes lesser actresses off the stage out of fear. The part she's playing? Ursula the sea witch. From The Little Mermaid. That's right. A supposed wannabe actress was so traumatized by two sentences from a script that she had read ahead of time that she became cataonic. Then the primadonna one steps up, takes a deep breath, unlocks her chi and flares her aura, turning her acting power on to maximum and stopping time so she can explain stage lighting. All the while, the matron of the acting company sits in the back, stroking her ferret. You can't help but laugh at how idiotic it is. And this is before the protagonist gets up on stage and gets her own personal quirky acting coach out of nowhere to lead her through her audition by the nose. Seems a bit unfair to the others!

The best I can say is that it was more focused on actual acting rather than just being a generic idol thing as I expected. It also loves to up the frame-rate any time they're in 'acting mode' or whatever you want to call it, which to me always looks pretty weird and kind of jittery. Just be consistent with whatever your style is. The rest though? Just Girls Do Their Best as usual, with all the absolute nonsense silliness of the above. Maybe lean in harder to the magical timestop acting powers? That was silly as hell, but it was also the only genuinely amusing part of the episode simply from how over the top it was.

Yeah pretty tame, but the blue haired friend being revealed to be a ghost or imaginary at the end at least made me interested to see where they plan to go with that.
