The Marginal Service #01 — Men In Not-Black

April 11th, 2023

The promos for this show lied to me.

Impressions:

I'm very confused by the marketing behind this show. It was pitching itself as a goofy manservice show, but most of this episode was basically Men In Black But Serious. Hard boiled cop runs into supernatural thing, gets recruited by secret cops who police secret aliens among us. Although I guess it's more of a Secret Invasion kind of deal. It isn't as clever as MIB though. They go to a club to find alien drug dealers. Literally the first person they see is the guy's evil boss who's basically covered in drugs. Then we have the ending, where the alien, finally revealed and in his true form… just stands there, wiggling menacingly for a couple minutes, while they do a Smash Brothers montage and announcer yelling of everybody's names.

The ending is super goofy and half-assed, but everything else up to that point is… not exactly completely humorless, but only some sarcastic remarks here and there. It doesn't dwell on the partner's death to make it seem super tragic, but it's largely bitter, angry cops being surly to everybody with only occasional breaks for either exposition about how there are secret aliens and here's the whole list of their powers, or multi-cultural snark at each other. It… uh… does not feel particularly well put together. The animation was okay for the most part, but the really half-assed ending left a sour taste in my mouth. Not like there's anything else on Tuesdays though. I just hope it figures out what the hell the tone of the show is supposed to be.

Fool me once CyGames, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

People can now see through their flimsy marketing stunts at this point after doing that cryptic PV nonsense with Zombieland Saga and Akiba Maid War before it, and shockingly, it doesn’t work here. At least there’s more fucking UmaMusu coming to fill up their coffers in the wake of this flopping.
