The Clueless New Student #01 — My Special Eyes

April 2nd, 2023

Remember when there was an entire LN subgenre over people with scary eyes?

Impressions:

Good lord was I tired of this show's formula about three minutes in, but it was bound and determined to stick to it. Every single segment, the same goddamned thing. Announce that he's new. Announce that she's the reaper and we bully her. Announce that he should leave her alone. Announce that he thinks that she's cool. She blushes against a pastel background. Do they expect that people have the memory of a goldfish? I know that the answer is because the adaption is just ridiculously lazy, and what 'worked' (but was still unnecessary) when things were split by time over separate chapters becomes unbearable repetition when instead thrust back to back to back to back to back.

Nor does it help that there's also basically nothing in the way of humor except the so-called joke above. I'm not even wholly certain what it's trying to go for. You'd think comedy, but very little was even attempted, let alone accomplished. Heartwarming friendship drama? But like all these slice-of-life things, there still has to be something going on, or at the very least, competent direction to evoke any kind of emotions. The most this show does is the token summoning of pastel backgrounds, sparkles, and mist. Certainly not compelling characters or a story.
