Skip & Loafer #01 — Slice of Loaf
April 4th, 2023
Please, my eyes.
Impressions:
Aah, banality. Oops. I mean slice of life. Where, sure, they may not make jokes, or have character growth or development, but that doesn't mean that we can't replace the background with sparkles and pastels every 10 seconds while constantly cutting to random backgrounds set to soporific piano music, lulling you into a haze until twenty minutes have passed. She is awkward. He is friendly. Those are the character traits. They are shown by her internally explaining it and making faces. She wants to go to school… and does. Exciting times.
The rare times I can get into these are when the characters are particularly compelling in some way, whether by humor, personality, or development, and this is another one that has every single edge that might give it a point sanded all the way down to be as inoffensive and unambitious as possible. No romance. No real character interactions. A few jokes here and there, but drowned out by the long, long sequences of just listening to them struggle to jog or speechify. I at least understand the appeal of soap operas. They're crazy. But these? Cotton candy for the brain at best, and I didn't see much here that would elevate it even past the middle of the pack of all the other slice of life things. And there be more of this exact flavor of show yet to come this season.
