I Got Cheat Powers #01 — Speed Reading Practice

April 3rd, 2023

I hope you like status screens.

Apparently this got an early premiere on FujiTV's streaming service, though the broadcast is supposedly still April 6th. No idea if that's a special thing, or first episode only, nor what vector it then came to on the internet at large that involved Chinese hardsubs. Definitely sure I don't care.

Impressions:

This took aim at being most horrendous show of the season and easily took the frontrunner by a wide margin even against its other cheat power ilk. The animation is godawful. The story is ridiculous. There's approximately eight minutes straight in the middle that is just a montage of status screens. It is bad. Even among other cheat-power power-fantasies, it's quite atrocious. And it's one of the super duper serious ones too, so you absolutely know that it's only going to get worse.

I would say that it has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever, but then I'm forced to remember that this subgenre often includes rapist power fantasies and/or things where they're just slaughtering rapists mid-rape like Redo of Hero and Skeleton Knight, and… sure, we can call only a little implied attempted rape at the start a redeeming quality. That's the sum total of the positive things I have to say about this.

OMG this anime, so he was small fat and ugly and bullied on top of that, so instead of personal effort or merit, he magically finds a door that makes him tall and handsome, the Anime.

Imagine the kind of garbage you have to be to write something like that, or the kind of damage that reading something like that will do to a teenager life, I cant even understand the state in what this industry needs to be to green light something grotesque like this, simply unbelievable.
