Hell’s Paradise #04 — Fishy Affairs
April 22nd, 2023
Bad day to be a giant mutant fish in anime.
Impressions:
I continue to be very lukewarm on this show. We're four episodes in, and I'm still waiting for the protagonists to do much of anything besides feel sorry for themselves in between doing exploding kickflips off monsters' faces. The two things don't mesh well together. The fanservice ninja introduced at least brings some levity, but like everything else in this show, also carries with her an entire TED Talk that needs to be recited uninterrupted for about seven straight minutes while everybody sits there patiently. Then we drop that to go to two other dudes who also need to have their entire backstory recited, mostly through flashbacks.
It's four episodes in and I am dreadfully sick of characters being stuck in their own heads while the actual present going-ons have only two modes; exploding viscera and exposition, both internal and external. I want the story to actually be moving forward. I want to see them encounter something, struggle with it, overcome it, work together, work against each other, learn something, grow, change, whatever. Flashbacks are not necessary for that. Recitation of one's character sheet is not needed. Delusion's monsters of the pseudo-week are at least a threat that they engage with and then overcome, not have an existential crisis until they remember "Oh yeah, I can decapitate it with my fingers" and then spend the next five minutes on reading from the Monster Manual.
