The Witch From Mercury #12 — Loud Noises and Explosions

January 8th, 2023

And one dude with way too much blood.

Impressions:

As much as I'd like to ignore the cliffhanger, I honestly found it the only actually interesting part of the episode. The rest is basically fifteen minutes of the terrorists blowing random stuff up while mostly people who I couldn't even tell you who they are yell about it. Not even the main characters. Hell, not even Guel until halfway through the episode. It felt largely the same as Musashi, just all indistinct noise and shouting. Then Suletta finally gets once again told to bother showing up to the mess she's at the center of and instantly wins the day. The fight lasts about 90 seconds before they spontaneously piss right back off into the ether.

But then I think somebody on staff realized that they were losing Sunrise Bandai Namco edgy cred, and the best way to get it back would be to go into the break with a mountain of jam. It's not a very sensical scene from an angle except to be shocking. Suletta apparently completely dissociates. Miorine is absolutely shocked that violence would be perpetrated on someone trying to kill her and her father. Girl, you wanted to build weapons of mass destruction first and then found out that they could be used for something else long after the fact, while going to a school that trains you to kill. You're in no position to moralize about squashing someone who is literally holding a gun to your head. But the point clearly isn't cohesion, it's transparently to generate buzz in an episode that would otherwise have created none whatsoever.

Thematic parallel of guy getting done in by his companies old weapons is interesting. like he was one of the paths Miorine was going to go down.
