Ippon Again #01 — Judo is All Doing Flips, Right?

January 8th, 2023

The apple heads are a little unsettling.

Impressions:

The sole sports show of the season, and it could not be more generic if it tried. I guess at least it's not of the Jump vein where they have special magical sports themed powers like the hypersonic pass or the megatubular kick, but everything else about it is every cliche, straight off the shelf. Protagonist wants to quit after a humiliating defeat, but the new school's judo club is being disbanded for lack of members and their space in danger of being taken over by another club, and wouldn't ya know it, but there's her former rival there to recruit her and rekindle her love of the sport that was gone for maybe fifteen minutes.

This is without even getting into the pacing. I don't know the exact math on how many shots of the ceiling, wall, fan, wall again, water bottle, ceiling again, etc are necessary, but once you've passed a minute of them, it's well past time to reassess what the hell you're doing. Same with the end. How long exactly are you going to be holding that person that you slammed to the ground for no reason there, waiting for the speech about how we can do judo, but for only fun this time to finish while everybody waits patiently, unmoving, staring at you. She hasn't moved for two minutes. Anybody going to ask if she's okay? No? We're applauding? Oh, uh. Okay. Sure.
