In/Spectre #13 — Ghosts Playing Old Maid
January 8th, 2023
On brand.
Impressions:
I did survive to the end of the first season, but I was extremely fed up with this show by that point. An arc that should have been maybe three episodes somehow ended up consuming the entire season, and the writing was quite godawful. Entire episodes passed that were nothing but the ignorant and incorrect explanations about how internet forums work, written by somebody who was either 10 years old, or 70. It's hard to tell, they were so out of touch with all sense. A flood of monologuing about how clever you are for four or five straight episodes is bad enough, but at least put in the very modicum of effort to understand the thing you're lecturing about.
So we come to this episode, starting with about five minutes of having characters sit in a circle, reintroducing the whopping two whole characters of the past 12 episodes, before moving on to monologuing again. This is why nobody invites you to their BBQs, In/Spectre. If you were actually out there, being a pseudo-procedural, investigating, learning things, coming to logical conclusions, realizing a twist, sumo wrestling an oni, and learning something valuable along the way, we'd be on better terms. But we're not interested in any of that. The journey is the fun part, not five minutes explaining the reveal having not actually ever been confused or questioning anything to that point. Or at the very least, the stabbing and sumo wrestling, but we're still half-assing the animation so that ain't cutting it either. And so, I bid you goodbye. May you monologue in perpetuity.
