High Card #01 — Marble Madness

January 9th, 2023

Whole lotta people tripping to their deaths here.

Impressions:

This was a lot bloodier than I was expecting, although to be fair, since the promos had mostly CGI car chases and one dude's power is trans-marbles, I was expecting the amount of blood to be somewhere around the level of Sonic the Hedgehog. It still feels a little bit silly to have the remorseless murdering super gangster to be all about them marbles though. Even besides him, the immortal lucky dude who everybody's fighting over kills some thug by making him trip out a window and splatter on the pavement. How we went from chasing a pug to pickpocket some guy to save the orphanage to this is a little bit of a mystery to me.

Still, at least it's something. The action wasn't the best, but the scenes flowed well without a lot of unneeded blathering. Dude turns what he touches into marbles. Got it. Other dude summons gun, other other dude heals fast. No explanation needed nor given (yet). It is a bit cliche, as if saving the orphanage ever isn't, but as long as the story continues to move at a decent clip and it maintains a baseline level of animation, that's a forgivable sin. Those tend to be big asks in anime, and I'm not holding my breath, but I'd rather watch this than any of the godawful cheat power things.
